Hillsborough County Marks Florida Arbor Day with Initiative to Address Arborist Shortage and Expand Tree Canopy In a proactive move to tackle the national shortage of certified arborists, Hillsborough County is commemorating Florida Arbor Day by launching a dual initiative aimed at expanding the local tree canopy and cultivating a skilled workforce to maintain it.
The effort, spearheaded by the UF / IFAS Extension Hillsborough County, will kick off on Friday, January 16, with a free educational workshop and tree giveaway. The workshop, scheduled from 9 a. m. to 11 a. m. at the Extension Service in Seffner, offers residents an introduction to urban forestry, a field currently facing a significant shortage of certified professionals.
According to county officials, this shortage coincides with a surge in demand for storm recovery work, climate resilience planning, and general canopy expansion. The long-term survival of newly planted trees relies heavily on trained professionals who understand proper management. Hillsborough's Extension Service is addressing this gap by providing a clear pathway for residents to enter the industry.
