As the Halloween festivities approached, a chill settled over Tampa Bay, a stark contrast to the warmth that had characterized the region. A cold front, described by Austen Flannery, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service's Tampa Bay office, as the "first decent chilly, strong front," was poised to bring the coolest temperatures of the season.
This change in weather was expected to arrive early in the weekend, with lows dipping into the 50s across much of the area, and some spots north of Tampa Bay potentially dropping into the 40s. The front's arrival would also mark a shift in the region's weather pattern, having been preceded by a weaker front on Monday that had siphoned off some of the atmosphere's energy. The Tampa Bay area was unlikely to see much rain when the second, stronger front pushed through on Wednesday, a development that would also help to steer Hurricane Melissa away from the region.
The powerful storm was currently devastating portions of Jamaica. According to weather service maps, cooler air would begin to settle in on Thursday, with early morning temperatures falling into the mid- to low 60s.
