In a move that promises to bolster the economic vitality of downtown Tampa, the Hillsborough County Commission is poised to consider a landmark agreement with the Tampa Bay Lightning. This proposed deal, valued at up to $358. 5 million, seeks to expand the county's financial commitment to renovations at the Benchmark International Arena, formerly known as the Amalie Arena. The agreement, if approved, would significantly raise the county's maximum renovation contribution from $108. 5 million to $358. 5 million. In return, the Lightning and Tampa Bay Arena LLC would be required to invest an additional $75 million of their own funds in arena improvements. A key stipulation of the deal is that the team would need to pay for renovation work upfront, making them eligible for county reimbursement. This revised agreement is strategically designed to secure the Lightning's long-term presence in downtown Tampa and address the pressing capital needs of the 30-year-old county-owned arena.
