Tampa Bay Downs has taken swift action to contain the outbreak of equine herpesvirus type 1 (EHV-1), a highly contagious virus that causes equine herpes myeloencephalopathy. The track has quarantined barns 25 and 26 after a horse was confirmed to have the neurological form of EHV-1, according to an article on BloodHorse. com. The infected horse was sent to the University of Florida on December 8, and fortunately, no other horse on the grounds has tested positive or shown signs of having the virus.
To prevent the spread of the virus, Tampa Bay Downs is taking numerous precautions. Horses from the two quarantined barns are not allowed to compete until December 27. Workers at both barns are required to log in and out, wear protective footwear and clothing while working, and follow strict protocols to minimize the risk of transmission.
All horses on the grounds must have their temperatures taken twice daily, and temperature logs are required to be kept for each horse, following recommendations from the American Association of Equine Practitioners.
